The National Assembly Member for Lower Baddibu, Hon. Kemo Gassama, has called for stronger action against hate speech and tribal incitement, warning that growing ethnic divisions could undermine national unity and social stability if left unchecked.
Addressing lawmakers during a ‘Matter of the Day’ statement at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Gassama described hate speech as a dangerous trend that threatens the peace and cohesion for which The Gambia is known. He urged citizens, political leaders and state institutions to reject divisive rhetoric and work together to safeguard the country’s unity.
The Lower Baddibu legislator expressed concern over what he said were increasing instances of tribal profiling, bigotry and inflammatory language in public discussions, particularly on social media platforms. He notes that such conduct is sometimes encouraged by individuals occupying influential positions, a development he said should concern every Gambian.
“Hate speech must never be tolerated in any civilized society,” Gassama said, stressing that leaders should serve as agents of peace and national cohesion rather than contribute to division and discord.
According to him, hate speech often leads to discrimination and encourages citizens to judge one another based on ethnic identity rather than character, competence and contribution to national development. He argued that such attitudes run contrary to the values upon which the country is built.
Gassama reminded lawmakers that The Gambia’s diverse ethnic communities have lived side by side for generations, sharing common social, economic and cultural ties. He said this diversity should be celebrated as a national strength and not exploited for political advantage.
The lawmaker warned that history has shown the dangers of allowing tribal divisions to flourish, noting that unchecked ethnic tensions can threaten peace and social harmony. He therefore called on government authorities to ensure that existing laws are enforced fairly and without favour against those who promote hatred and incitement.
He also urged institutions responsible for maintaining peace, security and national cohesion to remain vigilant and act decisively when faced with actions capable of dividing the population.
Gassama further distanced himself from all forms of tribal hatred and divisive rhetoric, declaring his commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence. He called on political parties to take responsibility for the conduct of their members and supporters and to promote tolerance and mutual respect.
Concluding his statement, the Lower Baddibu representative appealed to all Gambians to reject tribalism, embrace unity and place the national interest above political considerations, emphasizing that the preservation of peace remains a shared responsibility for present and future generations.
