The Office of the Hon. Chief Justice has officially launched the Users Committee of the Commercial Division of the High Court at the Chief Justice’s Office in Banjul.
The Committee comprises representatives from the Judiciary, government, financial institutions, and civil society organizations (CSOs). Its main mandate is to enhance the efficiency of the Commercial Court and recommend measures to improve the management of commercial cases.
In his remarks, the Hon. Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Hassan B. Jallow, highlighted the link between effective dispute resolution and investment decisions. He noted that investors are more likely to commit resources to jurisdictions where commercial disputes are resolved in a timely, transparent, and fair manner. The establishment of the Commercial Division is expected to boost The Gambia’s appeal as an investment destination.
Justice Omar Njie, who led the study on the establishment of the Commercial Division, was appointed Chair of the Committee, while Mr. Pa Alieu Ndow of The Gambia Bankers’ Association serves as Deputy Chair. The Chief Justice emphasized that the Committee’s inclusive composition reflects a commitment to stakeholder engagement and collaboration in strengthening the administration of justice.
He also underscored the need for specialized expertise in handling complex commercial matters and adequate funding to ensure the effective functioning of the Division. Stakeholders voiced strong support for the initiative, noting that a well-functioning Commercial Court would enhance investor confidence and contribute to economic growth.
The meeting further provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss challenges and identify areas for improvement, including enhanced technological capacity, improved infrastructure, and sufficient financial resources.
