Information Commission Submits List of Information Officers for Gazette Publication

The Information Commission of The Gambia has compiled a consolidated list of Information Officers and Deputy Information Officers designated by 49 public bodies in compliance with the Access to Information Act, 2021.

The list has been formally submitted to the Ministry of Justice for publication in the official Gazette.

Under the Act, the designation and publication of Information Officers and their deputies is a key requirement. These officers serve as the primary contact points within public institutions for receiving and processing requests for information from members of the public.

Publication of their names and details in the Gazette is expected to enhance transparency and provide clear guidance to information requesters on the appropriate officers to contact across public bodies.

The Commission said making such information publicly available is an important step in the effective implementation of the Access to Information Act. It added that the measure will help remove barriers to access, while strengthening accountability by ensuring designated officers are clearly identified and accessible.

According to the Commission, the list will be published in due course upon completion of the necessary administrative processes.

Meanwhile, the Information Commission has urged all Ministries, Departments and Agencies that have not yet designated Information Officers and Deputy Information Officers to do so without delay, in line with the provisions of the Act.

It stressed that timely designation is essential for the smooth implementation of the law and for enabling citizens to fully exercise their right of access to information.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with public institutions to strengthen compliance with the Act and promote a culture of transparency, openness and accountability in public administration.
