Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Deputy Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), has inspired young aspiring engineering students from both the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) as well as students from various High Schools within the Greater Banjul Area.
DMD Sumareh Janneh was inspiring students while speaking as the special guest during the World Engineering Day celebration for Sustainable Development organized by the University of Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) held at the University ground on Monday.
Mr. Janneh told students that anything done in engineering is science based, adding that to become an engineer, you need to know about mathematics, physics and chemistry.
“Engineering is all about applied science. The science that we use in our everyday life, is what is translated and called engineering. It also takes hard work, determination and focus to become an engineer,” he told students from various schools.
Mr. Janneh, whose father (Saihou Sumareh) was amongstthe first engineers in the country, got the inspiration to follow his father’s footsteps after traveling to the United States and saw massive buildings.
“I had the desire to follow in my father’s footsteps, but I didn’t even know where to start as I was just a young lost High School student trying to figure out what to do.”
He continued: “At some point, I thought I wanted to be a writer because some people felt that I wrote beautifully. But when I left for the US and saw massive buildings and wondered who built them and how. Out of that curiosity of how they did it, is what drove me into engineering. I later realized that this is where I belong.”
According to him, he learnt to get to know about things that he can apply while becoming an engineer, as engineering is all about applied science.
