The Department of Fisheries is holding a five-day training on data collection in fisheries management for its staff from 20-25 February 2024. Participants were drawn from different units of the department.
In her opening statement at the training, Anna Mbenga-Cham the director of the Department of Fisheries pointed out that the importance of accurate and comprehensive data cannot be over-emphasized. She said data serves as the foundation upon which informed decisions are made, policies are shaped, and resources are managed sustainably.
The director said since the mandate of her institution is to protect, conserve, and manage marine resources, she noted that it is imperative that the staff have the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively collect, analyze, and utilize data for the betterment of the fisheries sector.
During these five days, participants would have the opportunity to dive into various aspects of data collection methodologies, techniques, and best practices.
“Therefore, I urge each one of you to actively participate, share your experiences, and engage with your esteemed trainers and fellow participants,” the director told participants. Madam Mbenga-Cham appealed to the trainees to make the best use of the opportunity to broaden their understanding, strengthen their skills, and ultimately contribute to the sustainable management of fisheries resources.
“Collectively we can make a meaningful impact and pave the way for a more resilient and prosperous fisheries sector. So let us embark on this journey with determination, enthusiasm, and a shared commitment to excellence,” the director said.
