NAMs: Gov’t Spokesperson Cannot Speak For Police

By Binta Jaiteh

Hon Musa Badjie, a National Assembly Member for TallindingKunjang has enunciated that the government spokesperson cannot speak for the police, as the police should be left alone to operate effectively.

According to him, he said the issue has exposed the unpreparedness of the country’s security services in fighting against certain crimes because the issue is beyond politics and is an attack on everyone.

The NAM revealed this during the adjournment debate while saying in this time of national crisis the least they expect is politics, “I am disappointed on the different information coming from the same government, this shows that someone is cooking stories that are not coming from the investigation.”

He continued that if the information coming to the people from the government is different from what the police are saying it means someone is cooking stories to incriminate the innocent, but noted that “the police are equipped to do their job, so let us not interfere.”

Hon Maimuma Ceesay, a nominated member also said the hate speech is alarming in this country saying the political hatred in the country will create chaos.

“We are urging the IGP to investigate this issue and leave no stone untouched because the hate speech will create a problem if care is not taken,” he added.

She expressed that even though some of the NAMs were writing certain comments on their social media, she lamented that it is not a good sign from the lawmakers “I think we are the pillars of the law and security of this country. If lawmakers can write such on their platforms advocating for eye-to-eye on our security forces. There are laws in the assembly and those laws guide adding that our performance and deliverance need to show who we are. You don’t have to love the government but the country you belong to.”

Hon Sheriff Sarr, Jeshwang NAM also added that we must come together and forget about politics because we have a nation to build, we should stand together and fight for the Gambia.
