Lack of Mandika language interpreter hampers proceeding of alleged coup plotters’ trial

By Nicholas Bass

The treason trial involving five accused who were charged with treason against the Republic of The Gambia could not proceed yesterday at the Banjul High Court for lack of a Mandika language interpreter, this warranted the case to be adjourned.

The court was full to the brim with the family members of Lance Corporal Sanna Fadera, Corporal Ebrima Sanneh, Corporal Baboucarr Njie, and Sub-Inspector Gibril Darboe were in dismay when the matter was called and adjourned because there was no Mandinka interpreter.

The alleged coup plotters were anticipating the continuation of the case when their matter was called but it was adjourned without any proceedings.

However, Justice Mahoney iterated that they have no Mandika interpreter in court, therefore, the case was adjourned to 6th March 2023 for continuation, and meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution AM Yusuf presented his third witness for the continuation of the case.
