Darboe says IEC rigged December election

Lawyer Ousainou Darobe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has said the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) rigged the December presidential election in favour of President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe told a news conference held at his party’s Bureau in Pipeline last week that the election body provided a rogue registration which can’t be taken to any revising courts.

According to him, their rejection of the December election results was based on a valid reason and that they deemed it necessary to provide Gambians with factual information about the outcome of the election.

“Gentlemen of the press we think we should share this with you and the Gambian people should know that our rejection was based on valid reason,” he said.

“We did not just reject the results because we felt that we should reject it (but) we felt that the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) in complicity with NPP (National People’s Party) has really stolen the Gambian people verdict and produced a rogue register,” he added.

“A rogue registers that benefitted the NPP but they knew what they were doing and after all these are not matters that can go to the revising court. I want them to explain how three people can be registered in under three minutes. And why is it that registration continued in areas after the close of registration? I want to think that with these revelations, if those at the IEC are men of conscience, they would all resign, because they have been laid bare. We have put their pants down. Everybody is seeing them naked. I think they should resign if they are men of conscience,” he said.

“Unless they can come up and explain why you have published for Njau 555 (registered voters). Two days before elections, you produce a document showing 1003. Tell us why after the closure of registration in Brikama North, registration continued there. How is that possible?” he asked rhetorically.
