Kijera says Barrow deal with APRC is disrespect to Jammeh victims

By Mustapha Jarju

Sheriff Kijera, chairperson of the Gambia Centre for Victims of Human Right Violation, has hit out at President Adama Barrow that making deal with former president Yahya Jammeh’s APRC is disrespect to the victims.

“The indications we have seen is a sign that how this government is going is not encouraging and with the government commitment towards the work of the TRRC. This is the reason why the civil society is coming together in solidarity with the victims to organize the Peaceful March which is slated for the 16th October, 2021,” he told The Voice exclusively.

“When the president is going to bed with the perpetrator, he knows of all the crimes that were committed during the 22 years brutal dictatorship of APRC”, therefore he said he feel this is an insult to the victims and it is despicable for a man who established the TRRC, it is a total disregard for the work of the commission,” he added.

According to him, President Barrow has shown no interest in the work of the TRRC as he did not show any respect to the plight of the victims.

“I think we all have to come together to show solidarity with the victims and make sure the victims are not alone in this fight, the whole country is behind the victims to make justice prevail,” he claimed.

Mr Kijera said the nation can still reconcile but that justice must first be delivered to the victims of former dictator Jammeh

“We have to ensure we hold our government accountable to make sure they respect the final report and recommendations of the TRRC and it is time that we should come together to make sure we end impunity to make sure we end self-perpetuation in this country and our people in authority rest the will of the people and the mandate of the public office,” he insisted.

Saying they have seen the president going into alliance with the party of the perpetrator himself and this is a betrayal to Gambians.
