Residents of Greater Banjul Area bemoan shortage of water

Some residents of Greater Banjul Area are currently facing challenge of water shortage following last Wednesday dreadful windstorm, which destroyed many things which water and electricity are not exempted.

Speaking to various people in different settlements of the GBA, majority explained how water shortage affected their livelihood and their businesses since night of last Wednesday windstorm.

Oumie Sanyang, resident of Neima Su said It is very challenging for them to access water from their taps since Wednesday and they have to walk for a long distance to different communities to get water, saying “I paid D100 for each bottle (keg) and that cost me D500 per day just to have water because without water I won’t be able to do any of my house chores. Although is very expensive but I had to pay for it because I have no choice.”

She pleaded to NAWEC to help and come up with a solution because many people are suffering especially the most vulnerable people who cannot afford the money to buy.

Ma Awa Njie, also said she is using borehole but she could not have access to water because there is no electricity to fill up the tank.

“Since last week most of my neighbours have been coming over to request for water but she could not assist them. My husband buys natural water small bottles. That are what I use to cook and we use some to perform ablution and for my kids they are less than 12years so I use wiper and wipe them when they are going to school because the water will not be enough,” she explained.

She said the water shortage has badly affected her ice businesses too.

Malang Manjang, a resident of Bundung Bantaba, said they have been suffering of water shortage for the past few months but the situation become tense in the past few days.

He called on NAWEC to act and assist all residences that were seriously affected by the rain to have access to water as soon as possible.
