Gambia Action Party has warned against any attempted of fraud in the ongoing voter registration process, and called for prosecution of anyone found violating the registration laws.
The party’s comment comes days after the Independent Electoral Commission started registering Gambians for the December presidential election – expected to saw the incumbent President Barrow to be challenged by 18 political leaders.
Speaking to The Voice exclusively, GAP’s press secretary Sheikhna Faal said: “If anyone is found violating the laws of the registration process let the person be put to justice so that others will not try to repeat the same mistake. This is the most important election so far as it will determine whether we move as a nation or allow it to be run by clueless and irresponsible leaders.”
Meanwhile, he urged officials of the Independent Electoral Commission to ensure the registration process is done free and fair
“Bribery and corruption have been one of the killer diseases in this country and I hope is not the same with the IEC. And the whole country is looking up to you in making sure that no bribery of votes by any individual because it can affect the elections proceeding,” he said.
He said, we trust the processes and hoping it will run smoothly even though we understand that issues will happen but can be avoided by being loyal to your country.
“History will judge us sooner or later as far as Gambia is concern lets maintain peace so that good leadership can be attained’’
He called for more sensitization amid the voter registration to help eradicate what he called ensuring “Gambians graduate from blaming each other.”
“The voter registration centers are there for us and this is the only weapon we can use to decide who should govern us without favor or coercion. I don’t hope for obstacles to block the voting process, IEC should serve as referees because this election will be different from the previous elections. We might not be able to achieve the changes we all want but at least let’s get closer in development like other European countries,” he added.
