APP SG chides Barrow over draft constitution

By Adama Makasuba

Dr Bai Biram Jagne, secretary general of opposition All People’s Party has blamed President Adama Barrow over the rejection of the draft constitution.

Dr Jagne was speaking to reporters at the Banjul International Airport following his return from UK when he described the rejection of law book as a ‘waste of money’

At least D116million had been spent on drafting the book. It however failed to be passed to referendum after lawmakers rejected the constitution book, citing that it failed to capture the needs and aspirations of Gambians.

Meanwhile, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was requested by President Adama Barrow in a bid to resurrect the constitution fumbled as opposition and Barrow’s administration failed to reach to an agreement.

“(The) D116 million was thrown just to draft the constitution and finally rejected, we have a president who doesn’t care about its citizens,” Dr Jagne said.

He dilated on the IEC failure to establish facilities for the registration process and the rejection of the Diaspora who contributed massively in the country’s economy – totaling D28 billion.

The problem is the government not COVID-19 this has been there for long and the present regime made it worse. More people are dying, security is in turmoil and armed robbers are everywhere, he said.

Meanwhile, he accused Barrow and his administration of neglecting Gambians, but promised that his government will rule the country according to the desires of Gambian people.

“As we all know how Gambians are suffering and I stand for them to worry no more. The country is going backward,” he said.

“This government supposed to be creating a new dispensation as it was brought by the coalition for change,” he said.  “If Gambians vote-in APP there will be changed because we are not politicians but technocrats.”

He promised to ensure every civil servant declares his or her assets to entrench fight against corruption and promote transparency within the government.
