Haruna Sankareh drags to court for assaulting police officer

One Haruna Sankareh has been charged to the Kanifing Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Mam Samba Jallow for assaulting a Police officer in the  execution of his duty.

An offence that is contrary to section 230(b) laws of The Gambia.

In narration of particulars of his offence, the accused person, Haruna Sankareh on or about the 21st of March 2021 at Kanifing Police Station in the Kanifing Municipality assaulted one Cpl 4537 Malick Ceesay a Police officer by scolding his uniform shirt and trouser, whilst in the due execution of his lawful duty.

In his testimony, Malick Ceesay, the Police officer Cpl 4537 posted at Kanifing Police Station said he recognized the accused person and also recalled the days of the incident, 21st March, 2021.

According to the police witness, he said he was on duty that day at Kanifing Police Station and Haruna Sankareh was detained at the said police station before the 21st of March but was released the 19th on permission. He said on the 21st March he came to check on those who were in the cell.

He explained that Haruna asked for permission and he obliged him the permission to give his phone to someone in the cell but as he was giving the phone to the detainee, he said he saw him (Haruna) removing cannabis from his pocket, too, but before reaching him he has already handed it over to the detainee.

Because of this, he said he instructed Haruna to sit at the counter to wait for him. The Witness stated that at that time he had the accussed person’s phone with him inside his pocket which he said he (Haruna) forcefully put his hand in his pocket to take the phone and as well scolded him and tore his uniform trouser.

At this juncture, the police prosecutor presented the trouser to the witness for confirmation which he (Malick Ceesay) confirmed affirmative, while the accused person, Haruna Sankareh had denied all what the witness said.

The case was adjourned till 18th May 2021 Sargent 4196 represented the IGP
