Foundation seeks to find out causes of road crash

Road Traffic Foundation (RTF) has announced it will embark on fact-finding research on causes of road crash and provide scientific methods to curtail the road menace through engaging the authorities.

Road Traffic Foundation said the research seeks to advocate for road safety and currently statistic has shown that one hundred and fifteen (115) road fatalities occurred annually.

“We want to conduct a nationwide research of road accident in the Gambia and to provide those data to policy makers to enable them advert this problem because the number of people that die on the road is too much,” Lamin Ceesay, RTF chairperson told The Voice.

“Road crash is not an accident because when it comes to risks factors, they can be predicted and prevent road accident causing road injuring or dead. Road safety required lot of stakeholders that has to come together to find a solution, adding that the engineering part, the behavior of the drivers and pedestrian and the type of vehicle and road also contributed to road accident,” he added.

He continued: “we also have license department that give license to unqualified drivers and police on the road allow some of the vehicle that are not worthy to be on the road that causes a lot of accident, but if we conduct all our researches then we will know where the problem lies and we can focused our tension to minimize those problems.”

He urged government to validate national road strategy of 2013, noting that with this strategy road fatality can be reduce and to bring together all stakeholders that will find solution to the problem.

“If we come together to know what is causing this problem, we will find a solution to these problems and with the strategy that is validated we can bring the statistic to zero before 2030,” he assured.
