Farmer Urges Gov’t To Place Embargo On Importation Of Chicken

A poultry farmer is urging authorities to place indefinite embargo on importation of chickens to help local poultry farmers expand their businesses.

Speaking to The Voice in exclusive interview, Fatou.F.Gassama said in order for the nation’s economic to grow that the government should ban importation of chickens to help local poultry farmers contribute immensely to the growth of the economic.

“We cannot be competing with outsiders in our own country when we are capable of providing people satisfaction. Producers fear how they are going to sell their products due to the high competition in the market. So, the government should come on board and support in order to flourish the Agriculture Sectors.”

 “Poultry food that we can consider as meat and eggs are very helpful in human production. At the same time the poultry waste can be used in the garden as a fertilizer to the soil,” she continued.

According to her, wastes from poultry can re-produce as maggot saying maggots can serve as a feed to the fish. 

She added: “Poultry production is not an easy thing because one needs to feed and sell parts to cover the cost of production and at the end of the production you are expected to have a profit. “Government should make sure they help with feeds so that we can produce our own feed in Gambia with quality and less cost.”

She however lamented of drug of being a major challenge for them, adding “we have the capacity to produce chicken legs if we concentrate in driller’s production that is responsible for meat production.”

She said poultry can bring income for the farmers either in meat production or eggs production, and so many youths are focusing on poultry production with determination to expand their businesses.
