APP leader Says Local Production Will Uplift Gambia’s Weak Economy

Gumbo Ali Touray, interim leader of All People’s Party (APP) has said that locally made goods will contribute to country’s weak economy        also experiencing the impact of global coronavirus pandemic.

“We need to follow import substitution so that main products that we used daily would be produce in the country, such as cooking oil, groundnut, and milk,” he told The Voice.

Touray revealed that 58 percent of the economy goes to imports while 50pecent goes to service national debts stressing   that will continue to weaken the economy creating more debts for the country and that is the fundamental reason Gambians needs vote for APP for change.

He added that importation of goods takes a lot of foreign resource because Gambians believe that they are buyers not producers and 50 percent is going to debts and that is catastrophic to any country.

He urged that it is high time the country develops self-sufficient rather than depending on imports, revealing that The Gambia is one of the highest countries in terms of rice importation.

He also said land and swamps are available for farming to produce rice in in this country and this can save the economy.

Speaking on the impact of Covid 19, he said Coronavirus big gap Gambian economy and to recover from this impact there is a need to improve on agricultural system because farming plays a vital role in the development of the country.
