The Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has said party’s food bank initiative is neither partisan nor   ethnic or religious idea saying it is based on assisting needy families in this present situation of coronavirus pandemic.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe was speaking during a presentation of 300 bags of food items, which include rice, sugar and onions, to Kuntaur Area Council for distribution to the vulnerable families in the area to help them cope with the economic challenges created by the pandemic.

According to him, the donated items to the party’s food bank will be used to help individual families in this time of coronavirus pandemic crisis.

“This is never a political, ethnic or a religious idea by the party and beside all funds and other gestures donated to the party were done by different sectors of Gambian citizens being Muslim or Christian,” he said.

He added: “So the UDP food bank initiative is not to favour any person, friend or family relations because Gambians in all sectors of life have donated to the initiative. And even some people whom I know personally that are not in UDP party have all contributed to the food bank initiative.”

“That is why I say it is not a political idea but to help Gambians cope with the pandemic,” he added.

He made it clear that if he wants to do his politics he always come openly to people with idea of UDP as an opposition party. He said further that the cash donation he made to the council during the windstorm disaster was provided by the UDPP “but today all these were funds donated by all sectors of Gambians. So, there will be no favourism in distributing the donated food items to Gambians,” he stated.
