16-Days Activism on GBV Ends

The 16 day activism on Gender Based Violence with called on all issues that affect men, women and girls by Gender Platform on t December11, 2019 at ICTJ Office, Victim Center.

Gender Platform is a civil society advocacy group of women rights ganisations and individuals that was established to provide high level strategic support during the establishment of the transitional justice process in the Gambia.

Speaking at the press conference, Tabu Njie Sarr Head of Gender Platform said the platform considers participation and development as a fundamental human right of citizens, particularly women, girls and young people.

She pointed out that, they advocate for all issues that affect men, women and girls, noting that they have conducted so many activities.

She explained that, during the 16-days of activism on Gender Based Violence they visited many places to advocate and raise awareness to the people particularly the women and girls.

“Just past few days we heard of issues of rape taking place in the greater Banjul area, which was a concern to us”, she said.

According to her, during their forum some recommendations came out from women and youths, that there should be more dialogue on child labour, early marriage and FGM.

“The Government need to put in a regulation to monitor movement of children in the streets, especially young girls selling in the street”, she stressed.

Gbery Didier, on behalf of International Center for Transitional Justice (ICJT), said their commitment is mainly on how to make sure women’s opinions, issues are considered in the transitional justice process.

“This process is a great opportunity to improve women situation in the country”, he said.

He further said, they are working with Gender Platform to raise three local women groups in Janjanbureh, Sintet and Basse to discuss experience of women during the dictatorship.

According to him, they have help this women to write a report which will be summited to the TRRC on Monday.
