Gambia Coach names 23 players ahead of Angola, DR Congo

The national football team coach, Belgian Tom Saintfiet, has released his final list of Gambian players for this month’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 qualifiers away to Angola and at home to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Scorpions will open their Group D campaign away to the Palancas Negras on the 13th November in Luanda and play home to the Leopards of DR Congo at Bakau’s Independence Stadium on the 18th November, 2019.

Coach Saintfiet disclosed here on Tuesday that the 23 players would be used for both legs, while he expressed disappointment not to have Hamburg star Bakery Jatta in the team.

The 21-year-old was named in the Belgian’s provisional squad but has asked to be excused so he can concentrate on his club for the time being.

However, the team is Modou Barrow (Denizlispor, Turkey), Hamza BARRY (Hajduk Split, Croatia), Sulayman Marreh (KAS Eupen, Belgium) with other Europe and Asia based players.

Coach Saintfiet also retained the majority of players that qualified the country from the AFCON preliminaries. Saudi-based goalkeeper Modou Jobe (Toldo) tops the keepers’ list while Virtus Verona net tender Sheikh Sibi also made the call up.
