Gambia gov’t drops charges against former Speaker, junta member

The government Gambia has dropped charges of conspiracy to commit felony and interfering with information against former Speaker the National Assembly, Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay and Yankuba Touray, member erstwhile Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) led by ousted President Yahya Jammeh.

The two men were jointly charged with conspiracy to commit felony and interfering with the work of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) following the testimony of former army officer Alagie Kanyi.

The government’s decision was announced at a press conference on Wednesday in Banjul by Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubacarr Tambadou.

Before the minister’s press conference the High Court in Banjul presided over by Justice Amina Saho-Ceesay discharged the two men following the prosecution’s application to withdrawal the charges.

The application was granted and the court ordered the Registrar of the Court to return their travel documents.

Last February Kanyi told the TRRC that Touray and Jahumpa rang him and told him not to mind the Commission.

The Commission ordered the Police to arrest them for their alleged interference in its work.

Ceesay served as Speaker of the Gambian Parliament from 2007-2010 while Touray was member of the AFPRC that ousted the Sir Dawda Jawara regime in 1994.
