Gunjur, Berending Land Disputes, One Dead

 A native of Gunjur  Buba Jammeh, has been confirmed death following the weekend  clashes between the peoples of  Gunjur and  residents of Berending over land dispute.

The two villages in the Kombo South District in the West Coast Region land disputes dated back decades and last month, as there had been violent clashes between clans from Gunjur and Berending over the ownership of the said land.

 Jammeh, is alleged to have been shot with a gun by assailants from Berending village. The victim’s dead body was taken to the Gunjur Health Center amid high tensions between the two communities. Eyewitness said several others sustained injuries during the clashes.

There was chaos at the Gunjur Police Station where residents from both communities were present “Chanting it is the fault of the government”. Witnesses also claimed the deceased was shot by one Buba Drammeh who is been hunted by police.

However, Human rights Activist and native of Gunjur Amadou Scattered Janneh accused the government of negligence. “My concern is that the government has been cut sleep, because this is something that could have been prevented since the early stages.

Our mission today is to calm the situation and then urged the people to exercise restraint and give the government 72 hours to act or else we will act,” he told journalists.

Kebba K Barrow, majority leader of the National Assembly said government is very concerned in this matter and it will involve all to see how best they can solve the problem amicably to avoid any further consequence.
