Gambia Elected into 12 Nation OIC Executive Committee

The Gambia has been elected into executive committee of the parliamentary union as one of the four African countries of the 12 nations of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) as one of the four African countries

The Gambia was elected at 14th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC member states (PUIC) Conference held in Rabat, Morocco from 11-14 March, 2019.

The Gambia will be represented in the PUIC general committee 2019 – 2020 by Honourable Fakebba N. L. Colley and Honourable Ousman Touray.

The Gambian delegation includes; Hon. Fakebba Colley, Hon. Ousman Touray, Hon Sainey Touray (Head of the delegation), Hon. Ousman Sillah and Mr. Landing Jobe, director of committees at the National Assembly, who also served as the secretary.

 Hon. Ousman Sillah was eelected to represent The Gambia in the executive committee of the PUIC for the period 2019- 2020.

The Gambia, which is an outgoing member of the standing specialised committee of political affairs and foreign relation standing of the PUIC, presented at the forum a resolution and recommended for the formation of a high level inter-governmental working committee on migration comprising countries of origin, transit and destination of the irregular migrants.

The delegation added that the   task working committee should also mandate to identify and address challenges to protect the rights of irregular migrants in their settlement, voluntary repatriation and integration.

The delegation also proposed for a change of the phrase “illegal immigrant” to “irregular migrants” as indicated in the documents which were accepted.

In the final Rabat declaration, Parliamentarians, other commitments, stressed the importance of democracy and the institution- based in the process of development and safeguarding human rights and it guarantee for respect.

The PUIC member countries Parliaments observed that in consolidating such rights and facilitating it, people’s participation needs to be ensure stabilized with social cohesion, and building people’s trust in the institutions of their respective countries.

The PUIC members called for taking ownership of the building process through involving citizenry in the decision-making and governance of public policies, through their elected representatives.”

The delegates further   declared that true Islamic religion calls for tolerance, co-existence and dialogue, in any interaction with member states, and called firm intention to improve approach and to foster dialogue with the representatives of the member states.
