30 STUDENTS RECEIVES AWARD

At least 30 students in Sare Gubu village, on Saturday awarded at the community’s annual celebrations organized by the Sare-Gubu Students Association, in Sandu- District of Upper River Region.

The 2nd edition of the celebrations and award given ceremony organized by the students was held to sensitize community members on burning issues affecting adolescence youth as well as to map out strategies to protect them from all forms of abuse that will negatively impact on their holistic development.

Momodou Saidou Bah, the president of the union in his remarks gave an overview of the Union which was formed but re-activated in 2013, to promote and foster unity among the students and the elders of the community, with the aim of reaching a common understanding on the significance of education for parents to send and retain their children in school.

He dilated on the significance of the thematic areas which the Youth, Women, District Authorities and a cross section of community members were sensitized on, key among them is the importance of Community Policing, Sexual and Gender based violence, all inclusive Education, Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security and Animal Health and Hygiene.

In his presentations, Alieu Jagne 1st Class Officer of the Community Policing Unit of the Diabugu Police Station, described sexual and gender based violence as a violation of the fundamental Human Rights of Women and Girls.

He stressed that therefore the need to establish an effective and efficient policing system with the assistance of the public to prevent crime and also to promote open honest relations between the Police and members of the public.

He added that the concept of Community Policing is premised on ensuring inclusivity and cooperation of the community members in crime prevention and to be well informed about their constitutional rights and responsibilities as citizens of the country.

Karamo Sowe, deputizing for the Alkalo acknowledges and describes the event as timely and challenged organizers to keep up the momentum.
