Sheikh Tijan Nyang, the principal of the Institute for Travel and Tourism of The Gambia (ITTOG) has said that, the appointment of unqualified non-Gambians in hotels and other key areas of the industry need to be looked into.
He argued that if Gambia has enough quality human resources to export to Saudi Arabia then Gambians should be able to fill the managerial positions in its own Tourism and Hospitality Industry.
He was speaking during the graduation ceremony of the Institute of Travel and Tourism of The Gambia (ITTOG) on Saturday the 1st of December, 2018, at the Ebunjan Theatre along the Berthil Harding Highway.
According to him, the Tourism sector needs a new lease of life where minimum wages would be introduced and setting the basis for better opportunities for trained staff from Professional, Technical and Vocational Educational Training Schools.
He then added that, in order to contain the high level of attrition in the Tourism Industry, better wages have to be provided for trained professionals in the industry.
Mr. Nyang, who is a founding member of the Association of Small Scale Enterprises for Responsible Tourism (ASSERT) warned that the concerns of the Small Businesses relative to all-inclusive, should be looked into, adding that the demands of the workers of the Tourism Industry for unfair treatment as well as the better working conditions among other concerns would not be ignored but be addressed.
Mr. Nyang then said that his school will continues to provide highly trained personals in all areas of the industry so as to meet the demands of the qualify personnel’s for the tourism industry.
