Gambian businessman and philanthropist Momodou Turo Darboe has announced that he will decide by 24 October whether to establish a political party, join an existing political alliance or contest the presidential election as an independent candidate.
Darboe made the announcement on Saturday at the launch of the People’s Movement for National Unity (PMNU) at the Buffer Zone, where he addressed supporters and outlined his vision for the new movement.
He said he had received numerous questions about his political position but had so far refrained from declaring his support for any political party or alliance.
“On the 24th of October I will declare whether to join a political party or stand as an independent candidate,” Darboe told supporters.
He also urged voters not to exchange their votes for money during the electoral period, encouraging them to make their choices based on their assessment of candidates and their programmes.
Darboe said the PMNU would focus on good governance, justice and respect for human rights, with the objective of contributing to the development of The Gambia.
He called for national unity and cautioned against tribalism, saying political differences should not undermine social cohesion or national development.
“Our differences should not divide us. Instead, they should make us strong,” he said, adding that citizens could hold different political views while continuing to live and work together.
Darboe also highlighted the role of young people in national development, describing them as an important national asset and calling for greater opportunities, encouragement and support for youth.
He further spoke about the challenges facing women and pledged to support initiatives aimed at strengthening their role in families and communities.
The Public Relations Officer of the PMNU, Saikou Fofana, said the movement was established to promote justice and support Gambians irrespective of political affiliation or ethnic background.
Fofana urged citizens to reject tribalism and work together towards national development.
The PMNU launch comes ahead of the December 5 presidential election. The Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled presidential nominations for November, while 27 political parties are currently registered with the commission.
Darboe is known for philanthropic activities in The Gambia, including support for education, health, livelihoods and community infrastructure.
