President Adama Barrow has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the needs of Gambians living abroad, following his visit to the Gabonese Republic, where he attended the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations as Special Guest of Honour.
President Barrow, accompanied by First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, participated in the celebrations, which featured a nearly five-hour military parade involving Gabon’s defence and security forces.
The parade brought together students from military academies and personnel from various security and defence institutions, who displayed military uniforms, operational equipment and specialised capabilities, including medical and engineering equipment.
The celebrations also included a state cocktail reception and a tour of Belle Roi, a new city developed on land reclaimed from the sea.
On Monday evening, President Barrow and the First Lady met with more than 500 Gambians residing in Gabon.
The Gambian community expressed appreciation for the meeting and pledged their support for the President, while highlighting developments taking place in The Gambia.
President Barrow thanked the Gabonese authorities for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit.
Responding to concerns raised by members of the Gambian community, he assured them of his administration’s determination to address the needs and aspirations of Gambians living abroad.
The President also pledged to facilitate access to identity documents and other essential services for Gambians residing outside the country.
“Gambians living in other African countries are part of the Diaspora,” he emphasised.
President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and First Lady Zita Nyangui Oligui Nguema saw off President Barrow and his delegation on Tuesday morning at Leon-Mba International Airport in Libreville as they departed for Banjul.
The Gambian delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad Sering Modou Njie and Chief of Staff Alieu Loum.
