The new United States Ambassador to The Gambia, Laurence Socha, has arrived in Banjul to begin his tenure as Chief of Mission at the US Embassy.
Ambassador Socha was welcomed upon arrival by Bernard Mendy, Director of the American Desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, and Omar Sawh, Deputy Chief of Protocol.
Socha is a career member of the US Foreign Service with nearly 20 years of diplomatic experience across Africa, the Americas and Europe.
During his career, he has represented the United States in 12 countries across four continents.
As ambassador, Socha will lead US diplomatic engagement with The Gambia and work to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
He is expected to present copies of his credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad before presenting his Letter of Credence to President Adama Barrow.
Socha becomes the 22nd US ambassador to The Gambia since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1965.
The United States and The Gambia maintain longstanding bilateral ties, with cooperation covering democratic governance, economic development, regional security and people-to-people relations.
The new ambassador is expected to use his tenure to deepen the longstanding partnership and friendship between the two countries.
