National Development Party (NDP) leader, Kebba Madi Bojang has given out 1,500 bags of fertilizer to women farmers and gardeners in the West Coast Region and other parts of The Gambia.
The initiative is part of the party’s efforts to support farmers, increase agricultural productivity and contribute to economic growth through agriculture.
The fertilizer was presented at the NDP’s headquarters in Farato Bojang Kunda on Monday, where senior party officials, supporters and media representatives attended the ceremony.
Speaking on behalf of Bojang, NDP Chairman Lamin Jatta said the donation demonstrated the party’s continued commitment to supporting Gambians, particularly farmers and women engaged in gardening. He said the fertilizer would be distributed exclusively to women gardeners.
“This is the second time we are extending this gesture to the Gambian people. This emphasizes our party’s sustained commitment to improving the lives of Gambians and prioritizing their interests,” Jatta said.
He said the initiative would not be limited to women gardeners in the West Coast Region, adding that beneficiaries could also be drawn from other parts of the country, including the Central River Region.
“We want to touch the lives of all Gambians, irrespective of where they live, with this little gesture,” he said.
Jatta also addressed questions regarding the source of the fertilizer, saying it was produced in The Gambia and had been legitimately procured by the NDP leader.
His clarification follows a previous dispute between the government and Bojang over the clearance of liquid fertilizer imported for a similar purpose.
At the time, the government sought to investigate the circumstances surrounding the procurement of the fertilizer before allowing its clearance at the ports.
The NDP said the latest initiative was intended to strengthen support for women engaged in agricultural production and promote self-sufficiency through gardening and agribusiness.
