The Secretary-General of the National Builders Party (NBP), Ansumana Sanneh, has accused the Gambian government of corruption and urged young people to participate actively in the December 2026 presidential election.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr. Sanneh expressed concern over the country’s economic situation, saying many Gambians continued to face daily hardships despite voting for political change in 2016.
“Gambians continue to face hardship daily. When shall we enjoy our own labour? We voted for change in 2016, but that purpose has been defeated,” he said, urging voters to reject tribalism in politics.
Mr. Sanneh described the NBP as a party with a vision to address the country’s challenges and safeguard citizens’ fundamental rights.
He pledged that a government led by the party would create opportunities for women and young people, whom he said played important roles in the country’s political and economic development.
The NBP secretary-general also said the party was open to forming alliances with other political parties, provided such arrangements were based on concrete principles and the national interest.
“We are willing to carry the burden of the people. Leadership comes with commitment. When we look at the difficulties before us, we must ask ourselves what is within our power to change and whether we have the courage to begin that process of change,” he said.
Mr. Sanneh stressed that national development required hard work, commitment and cooperation, arguing that the country needed leaders prepared to make sacrifices and defend the interests of the nation.
He said the NBP had developed what he described as a comprehensive national development blueprint intended to guide the country’s development and help the party deliver on its promises.
“We cannot recover the years that have passed, but we can decide what we will do with the years ahead. Our difficulties must guide our planning. Partisan politics must not divide us; we must unite to achieve our aspirations,” he said.
Mr. Sanneh urged voters to make informed choices in the forthcoming elections, describing the 2026 polls as an important moment for determining the future of young Gambians.
Addressing young people facing uncertainty about their prospects at home, he said their future deserved serious planning and a clear path towards meaningful opportunities.
The December 2026 presidential election is expected to be a key political contest as parties seek to present their programmes and gain the support of voters.
