Amie Colley, National Assembly Member for Foñi Berefet, has said deceptive campaign strategies used during previous elections will no longer work in Foñi, arguing that voters have become more aware of political promises and their implications.
Addressing residents during the Meet-the-People-Tour meeting in Bulanjorr Village, the lawmaker acknowledged that she and other lawmakers from Foñi had relied on what she described as deceptive promises during the 2022 parliamentary elections.
“Don’t allow yourselves to be deceived. I was in a group in 2022 that deceived you to win parliamentary elections, making promises we could not deliver,” she told Foni residents. According to her, such strategy won’t work for anyone again because the people of Foñi are wise enough and have seen the reality.
She urged residents to distance themselves from political opportunists whom she accused of using misleading promises to gain power at the expense of ordinary people.
Responding to allegations that she had betrayed the trust of Foñi Berefet voters following her defection to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Colley rejected the criticism, arguing that her decision to work with the government was intended to help address the needs of her constituents.
She said that if she had abandoned the interests of the people, she would not continue seeking government support for development in her constituency while receiving her salary and other benefits as a National Assembly Member.
Colley pledged to continue advocating for Foñi Berefet and the wider Foñi area, saying collaboration with the government would help facilitate the delivery of essential services and infrastructure.
She also criticized representatives who, in her view, continued to benefit from their positions while failing to act in accordance with what they knew to be the interests of their constituents.
The lawmaker said her constituency was benefiting from government efforts to improve access to basic amenities, including electricity and roads, adding that she would continue to push for further development.
She called on the people of Foñi to support her efforts to work with the government, arguing that cooperation would make it easier to communicate their concerns to the highest levels of authority for consideration.
