The Gambia’s Deaf national team has appealed for D2.5 million to support its participation in two West African championships scheduled for 5 to 14 November 2026 in Sierra Leone.
The team is expected to compete in the 14th West Africa Deaf Football Championship and the 4th West Africa Deaf Athletics Championship but faces financial difficulties ahead of the competitions.
According to the team, it submitted a funding request of D3.7 million to the National Sports Council six months ago but was subsequently informed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports could not provide the requested assistance.
With the competitions approaching, the team is seeking support from stakeholders, organisations and well-wishers to raise the funds needed to facilitate its participation.
The appeal follows the team’s performance in last year’s competition, when it reached the final despite competing with a reduced squad. Its campaign ended in defeat on penalties.
The team said it had devoted four months to preparations for the previous championship and is hoping to overcome the current financial challenges to represent The Gambia at the regional competitions.
The team’s participation now depends on securing the necessary funding before the championships begin.
