Gambian journalist Bakary Ceesay is expected to speak at the fourth edition of the Rethink Media Conference on 8 October 2026 at the Museums Quartier in Vienna, Austria.
Ceesay, a freelance journalist based in Germany and former secretary-general of the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia, will participate in a panel discussion titled “Journalism Worldwide: Comparing Media Landscapes and Challenges across Countries.”
The panel will examine the state of journalism in different countries and the challenges journalists face in their daily work.
Ceesay will be joined by Slovak journalist Peter Hanák and Serbian journalist Milica Vojinović, with Rosa Schmitz serving as moderator.
The discussion will focus on media landscapes, journalism education and training, press freedom, and efforts to combat corruption and misinformation.
It will also compare the experiences of journalists in the participating countries with the situation in Austria, while examining common challenges and country-specific differences.
The panellists are expected to discuss the role of journalism in strengthening democratic societies and how European countries can support independent media and resilient journalism around the world.
The conference, organised by Wiener Zeitung under the Media Hub Austria initiative, will be held under the motto “Wem wird hier noch vertraut?” (“Who can we still trust?”).
It will bring together young journalists, media professionals, media makers and representatives of media start-ups to discuss credibility, fact-checking, trust in news platforms and the relationship between media professionals and the public.
The programme will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops and interactive sessions across three stages.
One of the interactive sessions will compare responses from members of the public and media professionals to the same questions about trust, with the results presented during the event.
Other speakers are expected to include media professionals, researchers, content creators and representatives of international media and technology organisations.
Ceesay is also a managing partner of The Voice newspaper in The Gambia.
