The message from Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Ismaila Ceesay that discipline is essential to success among young people deserves serious attention. At a time when many Gambian youths aspire to careers in football, music and other competitive fields, talent alone cannot guarantee a successful future.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of an Under-15 football tournament he sponsored in Brikama, Dr Ceesay reminded young people that discipline, respect for authority and commitment to their goals are as important as natural ability. This is a lesson that extends far beyond sport.
The Gambia has considerable youthful talent, but the country must create an environment where that talent can be properly developed. Investment in sports facilities, education and other opportunities is therefore important. The development of community facilities such as the KG5 Mini Stadium in Banjul and the Late OJ Mini Stadium in Serekunda Central is encouraging, as are plans for modern sports infrastructure in Lamin and Brikama.
However, infrastructure alone will not produce successful athletes or responsible citizens. Young people need proper coaching, mentorship, education and guidance. Families, schools, sports associations, communities and government institutions all have a role to play in shaping a disciplined and productive generation.
Young Gambians should also understand that discipline does not mean simply obeying instructions. It means developing the determination to train consistently, respect others, avoid destructive behaviour and remain focused even when immediate success is not achieved.
At the same time, political leaders must ensure that messages about discipline are matched by policies that give young people genuine opportunities. Investment in education, employment, sports and skills development should remain a national priority.
The future of The Gambia belongs to its young people. Their talent is valuable, but discipline, hard work and opportunity will determine how far that talent can take them.
