The Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG) is reviewing a national payment strategy aimed at modernising and strengthening the country’s digital payment ecosystem amid growing financial technology (FinTech) activities and increased use of mobile wallet services.
The initiative is part of efforts to respond to the rapid transformation of financial transactions and improve the security, efficiency and accessibility of payment systems across the country.
Speaking at a week-long strategic review workshop underway at Hallahin Eco Lodge in Kartong, CBG Governor Buah Saidy said the growing digitalisation of merchant payments and the expansion of digital government services require effective mechanisms to address emerging challenges.
“In recognition of this transformation in the financial landscape, the Central Bank of The Gambia has taken a conscious decision to modernise the national payment ecosystem to support economic growth, deepen financial inclusion and enhance the safety and efficiency of payment systems,” Saidy said.
He said the bank had engaged KPMG to support the development of a comprehensive national payment strategy.
The Governor says the strategy seeks to promote inclusive digital payments nationwide, establish a modern, reliable and efficient national payment infrastructure, build the capacity of stakeholders, and strengthen the oversight role of the Central Bank and other relevant institutions.
According to Saidy, the project, being implemented by KPMG’s Ghana Office, has reached 46 percent completion, with the ongoing strategy formulation workshop running from 8 to 12 July 2026 serving as a key milestone.
Meanwhile, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Lamin Jabbi said the project would enhance transparency in financial inclusion, digital services, infrastructure, tariffs and related payment systems.
He added that the initiative would prioritise local innovation while supporting the protection of financial institutions and FinTech operators in the country.
Sam Aluko, a technology and digital transformation consultant from KPMG Africa, assured stakeholders that the project would be successfully completed and contribute to transforming The Gambia’s payment system.
