President Adama Barrow has reiterated his government’s commitment to developing strategic infrastructure to create economic opportunities and improve livelihoods across The Gambia.
Speaking Tuesday at the inauguration of the Sanyang Beach Road in Kombo South, President Barrow said Sanyang had long contributed to the country’s social and economic development through agriculture, fishing, trade and tourism.
He described the coastline of Sanyang as one of the community’s major natural assets, saying improved access to the area could help unlock its economic potential.
“The importance of this road, however, extends beyond Sanyang itself. It forms part of the broader development of our coastal corridor and must be viewed within the context of the economic transformation we envision for this part of the country,” he said.
Barrow said the development of the planned Deep-Sea Port would increase the need for reliable road infrastructure linking coastal communities, economic centres and strategic national assets.
He said roads being constructed by his government must be designed to meet future demands and facilitate increased trade, investment, tourism and other economic activities.
According to the President, the completion of the Sanyang Beach Road would improve access to the coastal area, facilitate the movement of people and goods and create better conditions for businesses and investment.
He said the project, like other strategically selected road projects, would benefit farmers, fishermen, traders and entrepreneurs.
Barrow also stressed the need for responsible development and environmental protection as investment and economic activities expand along the coast.
He called for local communities to be actively involved in the development process and to benefit from the opportunities created by increased investment.
The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to investing in strategic infrastructure to improve connectivity and support national development.
He said the government’s ambition extended beyond road construction to establishing the infrastructure foundation for a more connected, competitive and prosperous Gambia.
