President Adama Barrow has accused opposition politicians of waging a smear campaign against his administration through what he described as false and misleading allegations ahead of December presidential election.
Addressing supporters at a political rally organized by the “Team First Lady” movement in Jambur on Sunday, Barrow said his government remained focused on delivering development while political opponents sought to undermine its achievements.
The president expressed confidence that he would secure victory in the December poll, arguing that the opposition had resorted to making allegations because it anticipated defeat.
“It is very clear to them that I will defeat them. That is why they continue to level accusations against my government. If they are not talking about a third term, they say the voter registration process was not free and fair or accuse us of registering foreign nationals. These are the kinds of statements they are making. We are not talking; we are working,” Barrow said.
He maintained that the truth would ultimately prevail and said the development projects implemented by his administration could not be denied.
Barrow urged Gambians to put political differences aside and support initiatives aimed at promoting national development.
The president also called on supporters of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) to mobilize for his nomination, saying he wanted to demonstrate the strength of his support ahead of the election.
Commenting on the “Team First Lady” movement, Barrow said it had the capacity to outperform some political parties if it were to contest an election.
He further accused some opposition politicians of pursuing personal political ambitions rather than serving the national interest, urging citizens to support leaders committed to the country’s development and the welfare of its people.
