The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) has intensified preparations for Team Gambia’s participation in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The committee reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that the country’s athletes are fully prepared for the international competition.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday at the GNOC Headquarters in Kanifing, the Chef de Mission and Second Vice-President of the GNOC, Bakary K. Jammeh, said the committee was collaborating closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Council and other stakeholders to ensure the team represented The Gambia with pride, dignity and excellence.
Jammeh says the GNOC’s objectives extend beyond winning medals, noting that the games provide an important platform to expose Gambian athletes to elite international competition while assessing their progress and competitiveness.
He says the committee aims to improve athletes’ performances and international rankings, monitor the development of beneficiaries of Olympic Solidarity and other athlete support programs, and strengthen qualification prospects for future major competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“Success will not be measured solely by medals or podium finishes, but also by personal best performances, national records, improved rankings and the continued development of Team Gambia,” Jammeh said.
He disclosed that The Gambia was initially allocated 10 quota places across selected sporting disciplines, adding that the GNOC adopted a strategic approach in distributing the slots in line with its long-term athlete development program.
According to Jammeh, priority was given to athletes benefiting from the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship Program, describing the Commonwealth Games as an important opportunity to assess their progress while accelerating their development and qualification pathway for future international competitions.
He says the approach reflects the GNOC’s commitment to investing in athletes with the potential to qualify for future Olympic Games while maximizing opportunities for international exposure and competitive experience.
The media briefing was attended by senior GNOC officials, representatives of sports associations, and members of the media.
