The Women’s Association for Women and Victims’ Empowerment (WAVE) has launched a two-day transitional justice outreach programme aimed at engaging young people on justice, accountability and the prevention of human rights violations in The Gambia.
WAVE launched the program in partnership with the African Center for Legal Research and Training (ACLRT).
The programme, held from July 10 to 11, 2026, at the ACLRT Centre along Sait Matty Road in Bakau, was being conducted under the theme: “How ‘Never Again’ Becomes a Reality.”
The outreach brought together young people, civil society actors, survivors of human rights violations and transitional justice advocates to discuss the country’s transitional justice process and the importance of preserving collective memory.
Organizers said the initiative was designed to enhance youth understanding of transitional justice through interactive discussions, oral testimonies, documentary screenings, storytelling and awareness sessions.
The programme seeked to promote youth participation in advancing peace, reconciliation, accountability and respect for human rights, while encouraging a culture that prevents the recurrence of past abuses.
The initiative was also being implemented under the campaign messages “Youth Driving a Culture of Never Again” and “Engagement on Youth, Awareness and Prevention,” which emphasize the role of young people in protecting democratic values and preventing future atrocities.
WAVE and ACLRT said empowering the younger generation with knowledge about the country’s history and transitional justice efforts remained critical to ensuring that the violations of the past were not repeated.
