FIFA is considering the introduction of stricter disciplinary measures ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aimed at improving player conduct and protecting match officials.
According to reports, the proposed measures target actions commonly seen during heated exchanges on the pitch. Among the changes under consideration is the possibility of automatic red cards for players who cover their mouths while confronting referees or opponents, in a bid to promote transparency and curb abusive language.
The governing body is also examining rules that would sanction players who leave the field of play to protest decisions, with potential immediate dismissals for such conduct. The move reflects a stricter approach to dissent and actions deemed to undermine the authority of match officials.
The proposed measures form part of broader efforts by FIFA to strengthen discipline and modernize the game, particularly as the 2026 tournament is expected to attract a global audience.
If adopted, the changes would represent a significant shift in football culture, where emotional reactions and protests have traditionally been part of the game.
