The Governments of The Gambia and Libya have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of migration management and diaspora support.

According to a press release dated January 6, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, H.E. Sering Modou Njie, received the Libyan Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Munsef Mohammed Haweel Naseeb, at his office in Banjul on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. The meeting underscored the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Discussions focused on shared African solidarity, mutual respect, and the promotion of humane and orderly migration processes. Minister Njie commended the Libyan authorities and their partners for the support extended to Gambian migrants in Libya, particularly in facilitating voluntary return and reintegration in collaboration with the Gambian government and international partners such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The Minister noted that many Gambian migrants are still in Libya awaiting exit clearance and assured that The Gambia is ready to work closely with Libyan authorities to expedite the process in a timely and orderly manner.

The press release further highlighted that improved coordination between Gambian and Libyan institutions has enhanced protection mechanisms, information-sharing, and operational cooperation on migration-related issues.

Special tribute was paid to the Gambian Diaspora Association in Libya for its continued assistance to Gambian nationals, which complements government efforts by supporting communication, protection, and voluntary return initiatives.

Minister Njie concluded by reaffirming The Gambia’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Libya, particularly in migration management, diaspora engagement, and consular cooperation. He expressed optimism for sustained collaboration during Ambassador Naseeb’s tenure.

In response, Ambassador Naseeb assured the Minister of Libya’s determination to strengthen ties with The Gambia further, describing the relationship as historic and grounded in African solidarity and mutual support.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Gambian migrants abroad while enhancing diplomatic and operational cooperation between the two countries.
