The inauguration of the 84.5-kilometre Hakalang Road marks a significant milestone for the people of the North Bank Region and for national development as a whole. For decades, communities in Upper and Lower Niumi, as well as Jokadou, endured isolation, economic stagnation, and limited access to essential services due to poor road conditions. Today, improved connectivity promises new opportunities in trade, agriculture, healthcare, education, and tourism, especially to historic destinations like Juffureh and Kunta Kinteh Island.
President Adama Barrow and his administration deserve recognition for fulfilling a long-awaited promise and investing in infrastructure that directly impacts lives. Community leaders are right to express gratitude; development must be seen as a right long overdue, not a privilege to be politicized.
However, this achievement should not invite complacency. Gambians have heard grand promises before. The President’s pledge of universal electricity access by 2026 and continued road expansion by 2031 must now be matched with transparent implementation, maintenance plans, and accountability mechanisms. Momentum gained must not be lost.
The Hakalang Road is indeed a symbol of progress. Let it also be a reminder that true development is continuous, built not on inaugurations alone, but on sustained service delivery for all Gambians.
