The flag bearer of the Alliance of Social Democrats (ASD), Marie Sock has preached against tribal politics saying it must be put aside if Gambians want to realise the progress of the nation.

She expressed worry over rising “tribal space” in Gambian politics at a press conference held at her residence in Bijilo on Monday.

Madam Sock state that Gambians accept themselves to be divided by tribes, which she said should not be embraced by anyone as it can negatively deteriorate the nation’s development.

“Until we honoured that we are Gambians and put aside our tribal sentiments, we can’t work for the development of our country,” she said. “The notion that 2026 is ‘do or die’ situation is because it is a fight for sovereignty. Are we going to face that fight with tribalism?” she questioned.

Madam Sock adds that citizens represent their country in international convergence but don’t represent tribes in such gathering, and national flags are raised.

She says the country is currently performing badly in various aspects, and people’s expectations and dreams are dashed off because of underperforming leadership.

She added that the oppositions must put their houses in order to oust President Barrow, adding that the NPP has failed to put its house in order and that of the nation as well.

Sock advocates for a shift of leadership to women as it will represent rapid growth and development not only in The Gambia but the whole of African sub region.

“Let’s have a woman to lead. A woman who is ready to stand up, speak her mind and take the country to a different level. It will be a revolution,” she reiterated.

She pointed out that if Gambians want change, then they should be part of an inclusive movement like the Alliance of Social Democrats.
