One Modou Lamin Sanneh yesterday appeared before Kanifing Magistrates’ Court facing house breaking and stealing charges.
The accused appeared before Magistrate Awa Manneh and the Inspector General Of Police (IGP) was represented by Inspector Cherno Baba Jallow who charged the accused with two counts of offence.
The first count related to house breaking under section 256 (1) and Count two was on general punishment for theft under section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025 Laws of The Gambia.
According to court records, the incident occurred on the 7th of June 2026, at Pipeline in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of the Gambia. He was said to have broken into a house belonging to Ousman Ceesay with intent to commit a felony therein with stealing and thereby committed an offence.
The particulars of offence for the second count showed that Sanneh on or about the 7th of June 2026, at Pipeline in the Kanifing Municipality, stole the following items: TV flat screen mark LG valued at fifteen thousand Dalasi (D15,000); two pairs of shoes valued at nine hundred dalasi (D900); Perfume valued at one thousand dalasi (D1,000). Total value of stolen items stood at twenty-five thousand dalasi (D25,000).
When the charges were read to him in a local language he opted to speak and claimed that he understood the charges while pleading “not guilty.” He denied any wrongdoing preferred against him.
At that juncture, the prosecution, Inspector Jallow sought for an adjournment to enable him call the first prosecution witness. He did not object to the possibility of granting bail to the accused person.
The presiding magistrate ruled that the accused be granted bail in the sum of D50,000 and one Gambian surety who is a responsible adult above the age of 30.
The surety shall deposit his or her valid National ID card to the registrar and the surety shall also guarantee the presence of the accused in court, in event the accused absconds or jumps bail the surety shall be held responsible.
The matter was then adjourned to 15th of June, 2026 for hearing from prosecution witness.
