Retired FIFA referee Bakary Papa Gassama has endorsed Team Restore Confidence presidential aspirant Sadibou Kamaso, calling for stronger investment in youth football development in The Gambia.
Gassama made the remarks during Kamaso’s manifesto launch, where he stressed the need to prioritise the development of young footballers and strengthen the country’s football ecosystem.
He described football as an expanding global industry with significant economic potential, urging stakeholders to take the sport more seriously.
“Football is a big business now. We need to be serious and support the young ones,” he said.
Gassama cited Gambian international Yankuba Minteh as an example of the opportunities football can create, saying successful players can have a major economic impact.
He added that The Gambia has many young talents with similar potential if they are given proper guidance and support.
“And we have many Yankuba Mintehs in The Gambia who are trying to make a name for themselves. Let’s help them,” he said.
Gassama said his support for Kamaso is based on the aspirant’s vision for improving football governance, including institutional accountability and efforts to address financial mismanagement.
He also expressed hope that such reforms would help elevate the international profile of Gambian football.
