The opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has condemned what it described as the victimization of civil servants on the basis of political affiliation, warning that such practices threaten national unity and the integrity of public institutions.
Speaking at a press briefing, PPP Secretary General and Party Leader Ousman Madikay Faal expressed concern over what he called the growing politicization of governance and public discourse in The Gambia.
He says civil servants are increasingly perceived to be denied opportunities, promotions, or fair treatment due to their political views, ethnicity, or regional background.
“Such actions undermine national unity, weaken state institutions, and threaten the democratic values upon which our country was built,” Faal said.
He stresses that the civil service must remain neutral and professional, adding that public servants serve the nation, not political parties.
“No Gambian should fear victimization because of his or her surname, tribe, political opinion, or family background,” he added.
The PPP called on President Adama Barrow, government officials, and all political actors to prioritize national interest over partisan considerations, calling for leadership guided by fairness, inclusion, tolerance, and respect for citizens’ dignity.
The party also condemned a recently alleged leaked audio involving Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie, who also serves as Deputy Spokesperson of the National People’s Party (NPP), saying it had raised public concern over the alleged politicization of state institutions.
