Suwaneh Says Darboe-Led Alliance Best Positioned to Challenge Barrow in 2026

Hagi Suwaneh, Youth President of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has described a Grand Alliance led by veteran politician Ousainou Darboe as the most credible option to unseat President Adama Barrow in the 2026 elections.

In a statement on the country’s political trajectory, Suwaneh said the upcoming polls should be seen not only as a contest to remove the incumbent but also as an opportunity to select leaders capable of delivering meaningful reforms.

He emphasized Darboe’s extensive experience in public service and a track record he described as “clean,” noting that leadership rooted in integrity is essential for addressing governance challenges and restoring public confidence in state institutions.

Suwaneh highlighted Darboe’s “one term, one mission” stance, reflecting a commitment to implementing key reforms, including the adoption of a new constitution aimed at curbing the broad powers of the executive presidency. He noted that the 1997 Constitution grants significant authority to the president, making reform a task requiring political will, maturity, and credibility.

Reflecting on Darboe’s tenure as Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Suwaneh cited achievements such as The Gambia’s return to the Commonwealth, securing a Chinese grant for roads and bridges in the Upper River Region, implementing the Jambur solar power project, and obtaining a €1.6 million pledge during engagements in Brussels. He added that Darboe left office without any corruption allegations.

While acknowledging the presence of other capable leaders in the country, Suwaneh said the current political moment demands leadership with unquestionable integrity and the determination to pursue constitutional and institutional reforms. He urged Gambians to prioritize competence over emotions in the 2026 election, stressing the need for leaders who can drive meaningful change.
