Councillor Baba Jabbi of Fajikunda Ward, Latrikunda Sabiji Constituency, has cautioned the National Assembly Member of the area to stop social media attacks and insults directed at a section of the constituents.
He said the National Assembly Member has repeatedly made disrespectful remarks directed at the people of Latrikunda Sabiji, particularly members and supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Councillor Jabbi said the UDP and the residents of the constituency could no longer remain silent in the face of what he termed persistent social media attacks and insults against those who supported the lawmaker’s political rise.
He recalled that before the National Assembly elections, he personally approached the individual at a time when the latter had no political backing and discussed the possibility of contesting the parliamentary seat under the UDP ticket. According to Jabbi, the prospective candidate initially expressed uncertainty about accepting the offer and requested time to consult with family members before eventually agreeing to proceed.
Councillor Jabbi said UDP structures in the constituency subsequently worked tirelessly to ensure the candidate’s acceptance, despite internal resistance and challenges. He added that party supporters mobilized extensively during the campaign, leading to the candidate’s eventual victory and election to the National Assembly.
“The current political standing of the National Assembly Member did not come by chance,” Jabbi remarked, attributing the success to the sacrifices, unity, and commitment of the UDP leadership and the people of Latrikunda Sabiji.
He described it as unacceptable for the lawmaker to now publicly undermine the same party and community that facilitated his entry into national politics, stressing that political disagreements should not result in insults or disregard for supporters and party leadership.
Councillor Jabbi urged the National Assembly Member to focus on his current political affiliation and path, and to refrain from making further attacks against the UDP, particularly on social media. He emphasized that mutual respect and humility were essential qualities expected of public officeholders.
He concluded by calling on the lawmaker to conduct himself with responsibility and accountability, noting that the honour of holding public office derives from the people and must be safeguarded through respectful engagement.
