The landmark Hakalang Road project, now in its final phase, is transforming lives across communities in The Gambia’s North Bank Region. Residents have expressed overwhelming appreciation for what many describe as a long-awaited development miracle.

On Friday, 13th May 2025, the Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Ebrima Sillah, began a regional tour to inspect progress on key infrastructure projects. The tour is part of a government-wide initiative aimed at modernizing transport systems and connecting remote communities for economic and social integration.

A major highlight of the tour is the 85-kilometre Hakalang Road divided into three key sections: Buniadu to Kuntaya (55.7 km), Albreda to Fass Omar Saho (15.14 km), and Bangally to Bafuloto (13.71 km). The project is the first of its kind since independence and is fully funded by the Government of The Gambia.

The new road network is already having a tangible impact on the lives of residents, easing access to markets, schools, and health facilities, while reducing transport costs and improving emergency response.

Alagie Ebrima Jobe, a resident of Pakala Demba Holleh, shared his gratitude: “In the past, especially during the rainy season, even motorcycles struggled to pass. But now, we can move freely at any time. This project has changed everything. We thank the Ministry and the government for their foresight.”

Fatou Mboob echoed similar sentiments, noting that previously inaccessible communities now enjoy reliable connectivity. “With this road, women can go to Barra market and return without delay. Business is picking up, and life has improved,” she said.

Seedy Keita of Kerr Demba Holleh described the economic hardship residents once faced. During the rainy season, vehicles stopped at Fass Saho. From there, it was bicycles or motorcycles. Now, we’re grateful for this development that has reduced costs and time,” he explained.

In Bafuloto, a Village Development Committee (VDC) member affectionately referred to as “Barrow’s Minister” praised President Barrow’s commitment. “Since independence, we’ve never seen a tarred road in our area unless we travelled to urban Gambia. Today, from Buniadu to Kuntaya, we travel with ease. This is thanks to President Barrow’s leadership,” he said.

Fatou Kamaso, also from Bafuloto, noted the broader impact of the road project. “This project isn’t just about transport; it’s about dignity. It has made access to goods and services easier and empowered women and businesses alike.”

Minister Sillah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to development during the tour. “These projects are part of a broader vision to improve lives and spur national development,” he said.

As the three sections of the Hakalang road are near completion, many residents across Nuimi view the road not merely as infrastructure, but as a powerful symbol of progress, connection, and hope for a more integrated and prosperous Gambia.
