The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) reported on Monday that it has received 27 Gambian migrant returnees from Mauritania.
According to the department, the returnees were received at the Amdalai Immigration Border Post on 4 May 2025, escorted by Mr. Saikouba Jarjou, deputy head of mission in Mauritania.
“These migrant returnees consist of undocumented Gambian nationals, who were unable to access the services of the mobile enrolment team during the period of deployment,” the GID announced.
The GID said the returnees were being processed at the Migration Management Unit in Tanji before their reunion with their families and loved ones.
The Director of the GID, Ebrima Mboob, told a press conference that there are requirements that one should meet before being allowed to stay in a particular country.
“And in Mauritania, if you apply for naturalization, you need to have two references who can attest to your character in a written document,” DG Mboob.
The Deputy PRO of GID, Inspector Sulayman Sambou, told reporters that the department has in custody Lamin Jawara and Lamin Jammeh for allegedly recruiting irregular migrants and receiving money from them.
“The two suspects are recently involved in a migration journey and gathering the would-be irregular migrants in Jambur. The suspects allegedly collected payments, ranging from D30, 000 to D50, 000 from the migrants,” Inspector Sambou explained.
