Convict Faces 10 Years Imprisonment For Drug- Trafficking

One Amidou Kujabi was handed a mandatory jail term of 10 years with hard labour during the period of imprisonment following his conviction of drug trafficking by principal magistrate Anna O. Mendy of the BrikamaMagistrates’ Court on Monday. 

Nuha F Korta announced his representation of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia. 

In addition to his jail term, Mr. Kujabi was further fined by the court to pay one million dalasi in default to serve an additional two years in prison. 

The convict stood trial in possession of prohibited drugs for the purpose of trafficking contrary to section 43(4)(E) of the Drug Control Act 2003.

According to the particulars of the indictment, the convict was found in possession of 22kg 850g of cannabis sativa, a prohibited drug, thereby committed offence. He was caught in New Yundum village in the West Coast Region of the Republic of The Gambia on 1 July 2021.

Section 43 of the Drug Control Act of the Gambia: “prohibits a person from engaging in drug trafficking and if convicted under this section the penalty is one million Dalasis fine and in addition a prison term of not less than ten years.
